20. července 2016 vytvořila nezisková organizace Ethereum Foundation, která vytvořila, spravuje a aktualizuje síť Ethereum, novou verzi hlavní sítě Ethereum prostřednictvím hard forku. Změnila tak historii blockchainu a přerozdělila nativní coiny ETH (Ether) v hodnotě 60 milionů USD, které byly odcizeny během hackerského útoku „The DAO“, jejich majitelům.
Stejně jako Ethereum používá i Ethereum Classic těžební algoritmus proof-of-work. Na rozdíl od Etherea však mají jeho nativní ETC coiny pevně daný objem 210 700 000 coinů, které budou v průběhu času uvolňovány deflačním způsobem, podobně jako u jeho předchůdce, Bitcoinu.
Těžba je výpočetně náročný proces, při kterém někteří účastníci blockchainové sítě ověřují transakce a získávají odměnu v podobě nových tokenů. Tímto způsobem vznikají (nebo se uvolňují) nové coiny ETC. „Těžit“ ETC může kdokoli, kdo má počítač.
Původní blockchain byl přejmenován na Ethereum Classic a nový blockchain, z jehož historie byla krádež vymazána, pokračoval jako Ethereum. Ethereum Classic funguje podobně jako Ethereum a podporuje chytré kontrakty a NFT tokeny. Kromě toho jsou aplikace Ethereum DApp plně kompatibilní i s Ethereum Classic.
