Why this matters (within $S @SonicLabs context) Pectra upgrade is not something new and is already live on L2s like Base, Optimsm & Arbitrum. Let's look at what it offers: 🔹Any ERC20 tokens as gas 🔹Batch transactions 🔹Session keys & spending limits 🔹Onboard with email/passkeys 🔹Social recovery via guardians 🔹Gasless/sponsored tx via paymaster What it does over previous EIP-4337 is that many of these changes can happen at the chain level, which simplifies the architecture and reduces gas cost, along with enabling apps to provide noncustodial social login/recovery without needing a third party (let's say Privy). Why can Sonic leverage this upgrade more usefully than any other chain? 1⃣ Sonic is an L1 If you look at Base, Optimism, and Arbitrum, all these upgrades make sense, but the moment you leave the “native app” leveraging these upgrades and interact with any other financial/institutional primitives that require the transaction to be complete and final, everything breaks. Most will still need Ethereum L1 confirmation for the transaction to be considered final, which might take 15–20 minutes, and the whole UX improvement becomes redundant. 2⃣ Economics at scale For these UX upgrades to be meaningful, they have to be economically viable at scale. You can build an app that is gasless, noncustodial, chain abstracted, with social recovery, but who is paying for the gas? With Sonic, the FeeM model is underrated but is an important piece of the puzzle. If 90% comes back to the app and the shortfall is only 10%, that can be offset with clever app design that does not interfere with UX/onboarding. 3⃣ Instant finality Let's say you got the economics sorted out, but if the chain is clunky and takes time to process transactions, none of these upgrades will make sense. The whole point of these upgrades is to make sure users never experience the underlying chain, never feel that the speed and UX of transactions are slower than any web2-native app, while still being 100% noncustodial, without the need for gas tokens, popups, or wallet extensions. In my opinion, the Pectra upgrade for Sonic hits different compared to the same upgrades on other chains as rest of Sonic's stack was already built to capitalize on it.
Sonic has now become more user friendly with the latest Pectra update (v2.1.2) allowing normal EOA wallets to upgrade to smart wallets. 🧵 Let's learn what this means for you:
